Here is a recap of events that unfolded in the Year-2020

Have you watched one of the top Thriller, adventurous, scary, suspense films? I am talking about Year-2020. It has every genre of film. This ungrateful year, which includes many events, is gone with major ups and downs. But when we look back upon this ungrateful year (which we won’t do), suddenly some horrified event, especially Covid-19, and also some positive came to our mind and also some key events which got canceled. 

This year taught us how much darkness out there, if you stay disciplined, supportive, courageous, helpful, at the end there will be bright sunrise. So, let's look back upon and go through some major events which taught us to be prepared, aware and ready for any uncertainty. 

From deadly coronavirus to Britain Exit (Brexit), Here are the major events which unfolded under the massive cloud of Covid-19.

1. Devastating Australia Bushfire (January 2, 2020)

Australia Bushfire,  which is also known as Black Summer. The country faced one of its most devastating wildfire seasons, the blazes continued from December 2019 into the new year. Wildfire burned an estimated 18.6 Million hectares, demolished over 5,900 buildings (including homes), and killed at least 34 people. Wildlife affected the most, just about three billion earthly vertebrates alone, majority being reptiles, affected and some endangered species were believed to be driven to extinction. This is an example of how climate change affects every living life. This event taught us to stop polluting climate and to take corrective steps for protecting climate.

2. Ukraine Plane Crash (January 8, 2020)

An international flight, scheduled from Tehran to Kyiv, operated by Ukraine International Airlines(UIA), crashed on January 8, 2020. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashed because the flight shutdown by Iran launched a missile. All crew members and passengers which were 176 were killed. The shootdown occurred to retaliate the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimeni by the drone strike launched by US President Donald Trump.


Initially Iranian government refused to take responsibility for the plane crash, but after investigating by western Intelligence agency and the general public confirmed that aircraft hit by the Iranian launched surface-to-air Missile. Denying for three days, Iranian government admitted that the military indeed shutdown civilian airlines.

3. Namaste Trump (February 24, 2020)

This is the inaugural visit of US President Donald Trump and his family to India. A huge rally of the same name took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. This is in response to the howdy Modi event that took place in Houston, Texas in September 2019. US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated one of the largest stadiums in the world Sardar Patel Stadium also known as Motera Stadium.

4. Covid-19 ( March 11, 2020)

Coronavirus Pandemic, which will be remembered by everyone. A deadly virus which had emerged from Wuhan, China in December and spread all over the world in quick time. On 11 March, 2020, Covid-19 declared a Global Pandemic by The World Health Organization.


A year 2020, which will be recalled as Covid-19. Because of the rapid spread of these infectious diseases major economies were forced to go under complete lockdown. Italy is the first country, who decided to go under complete lockdown. It affected business, many people losing jobs, Transportation disruption and much more. A virus which had affected more than 80.4 million people, out of it 45.4 million recovered and 1.76 million people died. And it's still counting.

5. 2020 Market Crash

Complete lockdown of economies because of Covid-19 triggered global recession. And it's directly affected global markets. Global Stock Markets crashed like House of Cards. Global markets dropped much faster than ever in history. Every global index was trading in red. Dow Jones industrial average, a US stock exchange dropped around 8000 points in a matter of four weeks from February 12 to March 11, 2020, Nasdaq dropped from February high of 9,817.18 to a low of 6,631.42, BSE Sensex crashed from 42,000 to 25,600, NSE Nifty crashed from 12,300 to 7,500, European, Asian markets dropped in an range of 30-35%. 


But from the march low most global index are now on their all time highs, reason such a sharp rebound is Covid-19 Vaccine rollout news, Global oil prices are increasing, Bigger stimulus package and so on.

6. Negative Oil Prices (April 9, 2020)

Demand which plummeted, due to Covid-19 Lockdown crashed Oil prices in the US to not only to zero, but in Negative territory. It is the first time Oil prices have gone negative in history. Since then, Oil price has rebounded and is stable now.

7. Black Lives Matter protests (May 25, 2020)

George Floyd, a 46 year old black man, killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while being arrested for allegedly using counterfeit bills. A white police officer, Derek Chauvin, who knelt down on the neck of George Floyd for about nine and a half minutes, after he was handcuffed, he said many times that he can’t breathe as he was restrained by the officer. Complaining many times that he can’t breathe, he became unconscious and died there. 


The footage of these events went viral on social media the following next day.  Floyd's death triggered protest worldwide over Injustice, police racism and brutality. The police officer Derek Chauvin who’s behavior lead to Floyd death has been charged to murder. The protest triggered more in August when a  29 year old Jacob Blake Shot dead by Kenosha, Wisconsin, Cop and handicapped from the waist down.

8. Oil overflowed in Russia Arctic’s Circle(June 3, 2020)

Russia on June 3 declared an emergency, after massive oil flow out in the arctic region. Nearly 20,000 tons of oil spilled from a power plant in Norilsk directly into the river on May 29. Power plant is owned by Norilsk Nickel, a Russian metal and mining giant. Just about 700 people were involved in the massive clean-up effort.

9. Emirates first mission to Mars (July 20, 2020)

UAE launched its first uncrewed space exploration mission to mars. The orbiter Hope launched on 19 July 2020. Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre (MBRSC) conducted design, operation, and development of the mission. The spacecraft named Hope was developed by Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and The laboratory for Atmospheric and space physics (LASP).

10. Beirut explosion (August 4, 2020)

An enormous explosion that took place on August 4, 2020 at Beirut Port, the capital of Lebanon shocked the world. An explosion was accidentally triggered by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which claimed at least 204 people, injured more than 6,500 people and property damage of US$ 15 Billion and left nearly 3,00,000 people homeless. The shockwave of the explosion fell to Turkey, Syria, Israel, Palestine and some parts of Europe. The video of such a massive explosion went viral on social media.

11. Kerala Plane Crash (August 7, 2020)

Air India Express Flight 1344, which was a part of the Vande Bharat Mission, to take back Indian nationals which were stranded due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The flight is a scheduled international flight from Dubai, UAE to Kozhikode, India, landing at Calicut International Airport.  After being attempted to land safe 2 times, it was cancelled because of heavy rain and tailwinds. On the third attempt aircraft touched ground on runway 10, but skidded from the tabletop runway and crashed 30-35ft down. The accident killed 19 passengers and both pilots while 100 were injured and a total of 169 passengers including 4 crew members survived.

12. West Coast Wildfires (September 9, 2020)

For the West Coast of the United States, 2020 will be a fiery year. Disastrous fire outbreak from California to Washington State.  This Wild West coast fire blazed more than 8.2 millions acre of land, killed at least 37 people and damaged tens of thousand of buildings. Poor forest management and Climate change set off more severity of the wildfire.

13. Protest over Farm Bills (September 28, 2020)

The protest erupts after the 3 farm act passed in parliament of Indian in September 2020. These farm acts are termed as anti-farm bills by many farmers' unions, and opposition leaders also said it would leave farmers at the mercy of corporates. The center however said that these farm bills will make it effortless for farmers to sell their produce directly to big buyers. Farmers union, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan had begun a movement “Dilli Chalo”.  Several talks have also been held between the farmers union and center to resolve this issue. It's been more than  4 months since these protests triggered.

14. Prestigious award “Blue Flag” to Eight Indian Beaches(October 14, 2020)

Eight Indian Beaches awarded the “Blue Flag” certification by International Jury, which include members of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Beaches who awarded this prestigious certification are Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Kappad (Kerala),  Ghoghla (Diu), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka), Radhanagar (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) and Golden (Odisha).


Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change said: “It is a great achievement, as no nation has been awarded “Blue Flag” for 8 beaches in a single attempt. Also this is a result of India’s sustainable and conservative development efforts”.

15. Joe Biden becomes president-elect(November 7, 2020)

US Presidential election 2020, which was held on November 3, 2020. An election that took place in times of Covid-19, and many attempts has been made by replicant to avert or delay the election. Democrat elected candidate, Joe Biden, who defeated President Donald Trump and became the 46th president of the United States. Biden made history by casting more than 81 million votes most by any candidate in a US presidential election.

16. Brexit (December 24, 2020)

Britain Exited from the European Union in short it is called Brexit. The United Kingdom withdrew from the European union on 31st January, 2020. It is the first and only country to leave European Union although the UK never adopted the Euro as currency. The UK agreed to leave European Union, but it still needs to be made law, which has been approved by both the UK and European Union Parliament. It took 11 months for the UK to reach a consensus and passed on both parliaments, and finally on December 24 Britain exited European Union.
